whoopie goals

Setting goals is so easy, but achieving them is much more difficult. We all know about SMART goals but have you heard about WHOOPIE goals?

If you’ve tried numerous times and failed to reach or even start working through your goals, then here is a new method you can try; not only to help you reach them, but smash them.

Many of us end up setting ourselves up for failure when it comes to goal setting. We say we’re going to do XYZ but it never ends up happening.

What can we do to change this?

Have a goal-setting plan in place – One that not only helps you set goals using the traditional SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely) formula, but also includes other aspects such as mentality and other identifiers that may stop you reaching your goals.

What type of goal setting formula does this?

The WHOOPIE formula.

WHOOPIE is a goal-setting formula created by an extraordinary CrossFit coach Ben Bergon. Ben has trained numerous athletes who have since become crowned the fittest on earth at the CrossFit games; such names include Katrin Davidsdottir and Mat Fraser. Ben knows his stuff!

Winning the Crossfit games is no easy feat. Not only do you have to be super fit but your mental game has to be on point too. Ben knows this and uses WHOOPIE goals with his athletes in order for them to thrive and succeed.

The best thing about WHOOPIE goals? They don’t just need to be sports-related goals.

In fact, the WHOOPIE goal setting method can help you when it comes to achieving any goal you set your mind to.

So what is a WHOOPIE goal?

Quite simply WHOOPIE stands for

I’m the type of person who…”

What does this all mean?

Let’s break it down.

Wishing and Hoping

This is where you write down what you want. What makes you excited and eager to wake up each day? Write it down. This can be anything from “I want to be a famous YouTuber who has millions of views on all my videos” and “I want to make a full-time career making content”, all the way to “I want to lose weight”.

This alone is not enough though – these are your wishes but why do you want these? There is a deep desire behind all of our hopes and wishes and we need to identify why we want these things.

Now let’s start using the examples above. Do you want to become a famous YouTuber or content creator so that you can quit your soul-draining job? Or, why do you want to lose weight? Is it so your body looks banging at the beach or so you have more energy to play with your kids?

There are reasons for the things we wish for. Identify them and write them down as well.

Unlike SMART goals, these wishes and hopes don’t have to be specific but there needs to be a reason you wish and hope for them.

What are the OUTCOMES?

The outcome is how you will feel once you achieve your goals. You need to write down how you imagine yourself to feel once you reach your goal.

Will a huge smile appear each time you open your email to see your latest AdSense earnings or is it that rush of freedom from being able to just get up and travel without worrying about being granted time off work? Or, will you be happy being able to easily play with your kids?

Outcomes are important to make note of because when the going gets tough (and it will), you need something to remind you why you’re doing what you’re doing and how you’re going to feel once you get there.

If you can’t tie an emotion to your wishes and hopes, then you don’t really want them badly enough.

The outcome also pertains to the S in SMART goals – you need it to be specific. So for example, your outcome would be something like;

“I want to earn $5,000  from content creation each month by August 2022, then I will be able to quit my job and enjoy my freedom.”

Obstacles are the things getting in the way or stopping you from achieving your goals and desired outcomes.  This is one of the most important steps when setting goals because these are what stop us in our tracks. If we can identify and eliminate these obstacles, reaching your goals becomes a whole lot easier

What are some obstacles you may encounter?

Time, money, lack of support, laziness – the list is never-ending.

Once you’ve identified these obstacles, you then need to establish ways to eliminate them.

For a lot of us, time is a huge factor. It just seems there are not enough hours in the day, but everyone has the same 24 hours, so now it’s just a matter of how you use them. Check out our time management article to discover how you can find more hours in each day.

There is no such thing as no time. You just haven’t made your goals a priority. Make your goals a priority and ensure you allocate time to them each day or week.

This is just one example of how to overcome an obstacle. Once you’ve identified your obstacles, really spend a lot of time working out how to eliminate them so you can stay on track.

If you really can’t eliminate an obstacle, you will need to find a way to manage it instead.

There is a famous saying

“Failure to plan is a plan to fail.”

It’s true. We all need some direction or guidance to lead us towards what we want.

Thankfully, one of the hardest parts of planning has already been done. The obstacles have been removed.

This is where SMART goals come in. How are you going to achieve your goal and what do you need to do to get there?

For example, your plan for getting big on YouTube may go somewhat as follows:

*   Every Wednesday and Sunday at 6pm I will film my videos

*  Sundays from 9am to 2pm I will spend editing my videos

*  On the first day of each month, I will create and schedule my social media posts for the following month.

If your goal is to lose weight your plan would be something like:

*  Exercise three times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays at 8pm

*  Eat 1800 calories a day.

Again, these are just basic examples.  Some goals may be a lot more complex, therefore reinforcing the necessity of putting a proper, detailed plan in place, outlining everything.

Just remember the A and R in SMART :-  make sure whatever plan you make is both Attainable and Realistic.

I’m the type of person who…

Okay, this is one of the most important parts of the WHOOPIE goal formula and I don’t care if you think it’s lame or not. In order to reach your outcome, you need to keep reminding yourself what type of person wanting the same goals would do.

Say you wake up on Sunday and don’t feel like editing all morning. Tell yourself,

“I’m the type of person that wakes up early on Sunday to edit videos no matter what.”

Why do we need to say this to ourselves? It’s to remind you that in order to reach your outcomes, you need to be the person who follows the plan and be the type of person you want to be.

“I’m the type of person who sticks to my plans”

“I’m the type of person who prepares their meals ahead for the week”

“I’m the type of person who (insert the type of person you are here that helps you get towards your outcomes)”

“I’m the type of person who goes to the gym when I said I would”

The more you remind yourself of this, the more you will achieve.

You’ve identified what you want and what the outcome looks like. The obstacles have been eliminated and a plan is in place. Now you have to do it.

It’ll be hard but it’ll be worth it.

When the going gets tough, tell yourself what type of person you want to be, because you want the outcomes.

The WHOOPIE goal formula is a fantastic tool to use alongside SMART GOALS; together, they help you achieve what you set out to do whilst avoiding getting tripped up along the way.
